National Take Back Day is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting. A majority of people who abuse prescription medications get them from family, friends, and the medicine cabinet. Take Back Day provides a safe and anonymous way for people to turn in prescription medications before they fall into the wrong hands.
A total of 4,497 law enforcement agencies participated in the previous Take Back day in April with a total of 4,955 collection sites. Agencies around the country collected 663,725 lbs (332 tons) of prescription medication. 313 Ohio agencies participated in April and collected 42,302 lbs (21 tons) of prescription medication.
