PERRY TOWNSHIP POLICE RECEIVES $41,748.22 IN TRAFFIC SAFETY GRANTS
Federal Funds from Ohio Traffic Safety Office Help Saves Lives in Perry Township.
Chief of Police Robert L. Oppenheimer, Perry Township, Franklin County, today announced the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s (ODPS) Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) awarded $41,748.22 in federal traffic safety funding to Perry Township Police Department for federal fiscal year 2010.
“These funds are critical to ensuring that we are doing everything possible to keep our community safe,” said Chief Oppenheimer. “Based on crash data, we have identified speed and impaired driving as a priority for Perry Township and are pleased to work with our partners at the state level to address these safety issues.
Crash data shows that 37 crashes related to impaired driving caused 8 fatalities in Perry Township, over the three year period of 2006, 2007 and 2008. To reduce these numbers Perry Township Police Department will be conducting high visibility enforcement, working over-time hours and holding educational and awareness events with the grant funds.
The funds are passed through OTSO from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support the efforts of safety partners statewide and focus on traffic safety priority areas such restraint use, impaired driving, motorcycle safety and youthful drivers. In the past three years, Ohio’s roadway fatalities have decreased to near record lows, There were 1,191 fatalities on Ohio roads in 2008, down from 1,257 in 2007 and 1,239 in 2006. Perry Township Police Department is working to continue that trend.
Competitive grant proposals are accepted and reviewed by OTSO, with funds awarded to projects that will have the greatest impact on reducing fatal crashes or significantly improving traffic safety systems.
